The artist's work for the first time in a detailed overall view. Julius Bissier (1893, 1965) can be found with his metaphysical and meditative work between the early abstract art of the first half of the 20th century and the expressive phase of informal post-war art. His search for a pictorial medium that would enable him to express sacred and metaphysical depth in his works led him to ink drawings in the 1940s to mid-1950s. The wood and lino cuts, wood engravings, terry cloths and monotypes document his intensive work with this medium and show that this group of works occupies a key position in the uvre Bissiers. The publication focuses on woodcuts for the first time and confronts them with ink drawings and colorful monotypes. In this way the close connections between the different forms of expression in the Bissier work can be clarified and analyzed.
